Smallest and easternmost of the four northern Channel Islands, a thin three-islet ridge that was the last fragment of Pleistocene Santarosae to separate from the others as sea level rose. Arch Rock at the east end — a free-standing sea arch carved through volcanic basalt — is the icon of the chain and the visual signature of the island from the Ventura mainland. The 1932 Anacapa Light, the last permanent lighthouse built on the US west coast, stands on the eastern islet.
The island's name comes from Chumash 'Eneepah' / 'Anyapakh' — 'mirage' — for the way the low ridge dissolves and reappears in marine layer fog.
