The largest religious monument ever constructed, Angkor Wat spans 162.6 hectares and was built by Suryavarman II between 1113-1150 CE as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu. The temple's western orientation — unique among Angkorian temples — aligns it with the setting sun and funerary traditions. At the spring equinox, the sun rises directly over the central tower when viewed from the western causeway.
