Megalithic alignment in southern Brittany, France: more than 3,000 standing stones erected between approximately 4500 and 3300 BCE in eleven roughly parallel rows extending over 4 km. The largest stones, in the Le Menec alignment, exceed 4 metres in height. The Carnac stones are the largest concentration of menhirs in the world and the most precisely organized prehistoric stone alignment yet documented. The associated Saint-Michel tumulus (4500 BCE) is one of the largest grave mounds in continental Europe, 125 metres long and 12 metres high, with a hidden Neolithic chamber inside. Local Breton legend, recorded by 19th-century folklorists, describes the stones as a Roman legion turned to stone by Saint Cornelius.
Three thousand stones were dragged into eleven parallel ranks on a Brittany hillside before the wheel was invented — and then the people who placed them stopped using stone.
