Five towering sandstone pillars rising 48 meters from the Teutoburg Forest in northwestern Germany, the Externsteine have been a sacred site since Paleolithic times — Neanderthal tool flakes have been found at their base. A carved relief depicting the Descent from the Cross (c. 1130 CE) adorns one face, but the site's astronomical function predates Christianity by millennia. A circular window in the upper chapel aligns precisely with the summer solstice sunrise and the northernmost moonrise at the lunar standstill. A rock-cut chamber at the summit may have served as an ancient observatory. At Giza bearing 134.53° and 3,041 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the Externsteine sit on a north-south alignment connecting to Scandinavian power sites. The pillars' quartzite-rich sandstone generates piezoelectric effects when stressed by temperature changes, and their vertical fractures create natural acoustic resonance chambers that amplify wind into audible frequencies.
