Sandstone outcrop in the Teutoburg Forest of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, consisting of five free-standing pillars rising up to 40 metres from the surrounding land. Composed of Lower Cretaceous Osning Sandstone, uplifted approximately 70 million years ago and weathered into their current form. A circular hole cut through the chamber on the second pinnacle aligns with the summer solstice sunrise and the major lunar standstill — first measured by archaeologist Walther Matthes in the 1930s. The 12th-century Christian relief on the lower face depicts the Descent from the Cross and is one of the earliest large-scale stone reliefs in northern Europe. The site became a focal point for German romantic nationalism in the 19th century and was investigated by the SS-Ahnenerbe in the 1930s, contributing to controversy that still shadows its archaeology.
