Southern prong of the Point Conception triple-headland, the tip the coast bends around as it turns east into the Santa Barbara Channel. The point sits on the seaward edge of Hollister Ranch, one of the longest privately-held stretches of undeveloped California coastline.
The name 'Government Point' dates to the 1850s federal reservation for a never-built fortification; the headland today is the south anchor of the same coastal hinge the Chumash named Humqaq.
