Site of the Honda Point Disaster on the night of 8 September 1923, when seven US Navy destroyers of Destroyer Squadron 11 — steaming south at 20 knots in heavy fog on dead-reckoning navigation — drove onto the rocks within a four-minute span. Twenty-three sailors died; it remains the largest peacetime loss of US Navy surface ships. The point sits about five miles northwest of Point Conception's coastal pivot, on the same hinge of coastline where prevailing currents wrap around the Western Gate.

Local mariners called the stretch 'Devil's Jaw' before the disaster; the wreck site is still littered with destroyer plating visible at low tide.
