Joya de Ceren — the "Pompeii of the Americas" — preserves an entire Maya farming village frozen in time by the Loma Caldera volcanic eruption around 600 CE. UNESCO World Heritage status recognizes its unparalleled preservation: thatched roofs, ceramic vessels with food still inside, a garden with rows of maguey and maize, even a half-eaten meal. Unlike elite ceremonial centers, this site reveals daily life of common Maya people. Discovered in 1976 during bulldozing, the ash preserved organic materials rarely found at tropical sites. Its 51.66° Giza bearing connects this village to the broader Salvadoran alignment zone.
