Mount Hermon is the highest peak in the Anti-Lebanon range, rising to 2,814 metres on the tri-border of Syria, Lebanon, and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, snow-capped for most of the year and visible across northern Galilee on a clear day. Its limestone bulk is the principal source of the Jordan River, feeding the Banias and Dan springs at its southern foot through fractured karst aquifers. Mount Hermon is named directly in the Hebrew Bible (Psalm 133, Deuteronomy 3, Joshua 11) and identified in the apocryphal Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 6) as the place where the two hundred Watchers led by Semjaza descended from heaven and bound themselves by mutual oath. Its Hellenistic-era summit temple of Pan, with associated baetyls scattered across the upper slopes, and the great cult cave of Banias below were both major Greco-Roman religious centres serving the surrounding Phoenician and Iturean populations. A small UN observation post and a fortified Israeli military and ski installation now share the upper plateau.

The mountain currently sits across a closed armistice line, and the same snowmelt feeds drinking water to three states that do not speak.
