Coastal mountain ridge in northern Israel, 39 km long with a maximum elevation of 546 metres at the southern end. ” Caves in the western face (Tabun, Skhul, Kebara) preserve continuous archaeological deposits spanning 200,000 years and contain the bones of Neanderthal, early modern human, and transitional populations — making Mount Carmel one of the most important sites in human evolutionary archaeology and a UNESCO World Heritage site (2012). The mountain is associated in the Hebrew Bible with the prophet Elijah's contest against the priests of Baal (1 Kings 18). The Stella Maris Carmelite Monastery, on the western promontory, is the headquarters of the Carmelite order (founded 1209). Stella Maris is the southern terminus of the Saint Michael Line that runs through Europe to Skellig Michael.

Two hundred thousand years of Neanderthal and early human remains came out of the same caves where Elijah is said to have called fire from heaven.
