An ancient necropolis carved into a sheer cliff face 12 kilometers northwest of Persepolis, containing the monumental tombs of four Achaemenid Great Kings — Darius I, Xerxes I, Artaxerxes I, and Darius II. Each tomb is carved in the shape of a massive cross, 23 meters high, cut 15+ meters into the living rock. Below the royal tombs stands the Ka'ba-ye Zartosht (Cube of Zoroaster) — a mysterious 12-meter stone tower whose purpose remains debated: fire temple, royal archive, or astronomical observatory. The oldest reliefs are Elamite, dating to approximately 1000 BCE. Eight Sasanian rock reliefs added between 225-310 CE depict investiture scenes, royal victories, and equestrian combat, making the cliff a continuous canvas of imperial power spanning 1,300 years.
