Etched into Peru's Nazca Desert between 500 BCE and 500 CE, the Nazca Lines comprise over 1,000 geoglyphs spanning 450 square kilometers — including 70 animal and plant figures, the largest stretching 370 meters. Created by removing iron-oxide-coated pebbles to reveal pale ground beneath, the lines have survived two millennia thanks to one of Earth's driest climates (less than 25mm annual rainfall). Many straight lines point to water sources; others track solstice positions on the horizon. The Spider geoglyph depicts a rare genus (Ricinulei) whose leg segment encodes Orion's belt — visible only under magnification. At Giza bearing 63.11° and 12,353 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the Nazca Lines sit atop one of the most seismically active zones on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where underground aquifer systems create piezoelectric effects in the iron-rich surface layer. Their enormous scale — only fully visible from altitude — remains one of archaeology's most provocative puzzles.
