Neolithic passage tomb in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, Ireland. Constructed approximately 3200 BCE — predating the pyramids of Giza by 600 years and Stonehenge by 500 years. The cairn covers 4,500 m² and stands 12 metres tall; the kerb is ringed by 97 boundary stones, many engraved with megalithic spirals, lozenges, and chevrons. The 19-metre passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a 6-metre corbelled vault — still watertight after 5,200 years. A precisely engineered roof-box above the entrance admits a 17-metre shaft of sunlight along the passage floor for approximately 17 minutes around dawn on the winter solstice (December 19–23), illuminating the rear chamber. The alignment was rediscovered by archaeologist Michael O'Kelly on December 21, 1967.
The chamber wasn't entered for thousands of years — but the dawn light still arrives on time, every December, exactly where it was sent.
