The Chumash named this headland Humqaq — 'the Raven Comes' — and recognized it as the Western Gate, the threshold where souls of the dead cross westward to Šimilaqša. It is the only point on the California coast where the coastline pivots a full 90° from north-south to east-west, a coastal hinge mirrored offshore by the Hosgri Fault handoff zone. Vandenberg Space Force Base sits directly north of the pivot and uses this geographic break for polar-orbit launches (the corridor only works because the coastline turns here). The Honda Point Disaster of 8 September 1923 — seven US Navy destroyers driven onto the rocks five miles to the north in a single night, 23 sailors dead, the worst peacetime loss in US Navy history — happened on the approach to this same hinge.

The Chumash protocol named the geometry; the navy met it without a protocol and lost a squadron in fifteen minutes.
