Westernmost of the Channel Islands, exposed first to North Pacific swell and northwest wind. The Chumash called it Tuqan. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo — the first European to reach California in 1542 — is believed by NPS and California State Lands Commission tradition to be buried somewhere on the island, but the grave has never been located. Caliche forests at Point Bennett record Pleistocene root systems lithified in place; the surrounding dunes hold one of the largest pinniped rookeries on the North American Pacific coast.
The US Navy used the island as an aerial bombing range until 1963, leaving unexploded ordnance still being cleared.
