34.0167°N, 119.7500°W.
Largest of the Channel Islands and the Chumash homeland of Limuw. The island is co-managed — The Nature Conservancy holds roughly 76% of the western reserve, the National Park Service the eastern 24% — and is bisected lengthwise by the Santa Cruz Island Fault, an east-west structural seam that splits the island's geology and ecology in two. Endemic Bishop pine groves crown the central ridges; the Channel Island fox subspecies Urocyon littoralis santacruzae is found nowhere else.
Painted Cave on the northwest coast is one of the largest sea caves on Earth, named for the lichen and mineral pigments staining its 50-metre entrance arch.
