The North Acropolis at Yaxhá on the shore of Lake Yaxhá in the Petén Basin of northern Guatemala is the largest architectural complex at the site — an elevated platform supporting nine temple-pyramids and several palace ranges. The acropolis was built up in stages between approximately 100 BCE and 900 CE, with the principal construction phases dating to the Early Classic between 250 and 550 CE. The platform follows the Petén triadic-group convention but expanded into a more complex assemblage of clustered pyramids around shared interior plazas. Yaxhá is one of the few Maya sites whose ancient name has been securely identified in hieroglyphic inscriptions — "Yaxhá" itself appears as YAX-A on local monuments, meaning "Blue-Green Water," a direct reference to the lake.

The North Acropolis is a complex whose builders left their city's name carved on the stones, in a language nobody who lives nearby today can read.
