The closest thing to heaven there is. A cold fire — if the sun is the hot fire, this is the cool one. You carve the face, the room spits you out, and for a few seconds you were inside the most concentrated point of the whole wave.
You were a hand's width wrong. Everything you thought you controlled is taken instantly. The broken wave is one-fifth air — you can't swim it — and its eddies drive a body down, into the dark, onto a seafloor you've never seen.
The body has an ancient defense: cold water on the face triggers the mammalian dive reflex — heart rate drops 10–25%, blood shunts to the core, the spleen releases stored oxygen.
