The Living Letters

Kabbalah says the world was spelled into being — twenty-two letters, each one also a number. Build a word. Read its weight. Find what it secretly equals.

Final forms carry their plain value — the standard reckoning, מספר הכרחי.

The letters, and what they are

Each letter is a sound, a number, and an old picture — ox, house, door, water. In Sefer Yetzirah they are the construction-material of the world. Tap one to set it on the loom above.

The letter on the table

The scribe sets one letter down each day — the same for everyone, until midnight turns it.

Ask the Sofer

The scribe keeps only what the letters themselves are recorded to mean. Put a letter, a value, or a word; he answers in their own words, cited — and says no more.

What this is — and isn't

Gematria is arithmetic. Every Hebrew letter is also a number, so every word carries a sum — and words that sum the same have, for three thousand years, been read as quietly related. That is all that happens here: addition. When אהבה (love) and אחד (one) both come to thirteen, it is not proof and it is not prophecy. It is a rhyme in the number — a thing to sit with, not a verdict to obey.

We show you the math. We do not tell you what it means.

The letter values are the standard reckoning — mispar hechrachi. The meanings are the old pictographs — ox, house, door, water. A mirror with twenty-two faces, not a fortune, not advice, not a diagnosis.

And you —

What is the one name you keep reckoning?

A name, a word, a thing you keep adding up. Set it down here — the ones that move us, we follow.
