THRESHOLD.sensory-safe school signals

The bell your school rings
is sharper than an air-raid siren.

Same word. Opposite instrument. Turn your volume up and play both — you'll flinch at one and not the other before you read a single number.

The test — real recordings

Hear the bell. Then hear the fix.

⚠ The bell is a real, deliberately harsh recording. Volume up first.
Now — the US school bell

The daily alarm

Real recording (Freesound 378394). Its loudest energy screams at ~6.5 kHz — above the church bell, above the siren.
Spectrogram of the real US school bell: brightest energy above 6 kHz.
brightness 6555 Hz energy >2 kHz 97%
The fix — Japan's signal

The same job, done kindly

Real recording of the Westminster chime (Freesound 620589) — the melodic school signal Japan adopted to escape the air-raid association.
Spectrogram of the Westminster chime: warm low energy, the region above 2 kHz nearly empty.
brightness 973 Hz energy >2 kHz 3%
live spectrumred bars = energy above 2 kHz (the sharp region)
🔊 volume
Overlay: the school bell's energy sits high and to the right; the Westminster chime sits low.

All clips are real recordings, peak-normalized so the comparison is about spectrum, not level. Metric: spectral centroid (brightness) and share of energy above 2 kHz (the high, sharp region the ear registers as piercing).

0→0 Hz brightness
Spectral centroid of the real recordings. The US school bell (6555 Hz) is about 7× brighter than the chime the rest of the world uses (973 Hz). Same job. Same audibility. One is pitched to startle; the other to settle.
Context — even these are gentler

The school bell out-sharps the alarm.

Two more real recordings. Both sit near 500 Hz — warm and low. Your school bell is more than ten times brighter than either.

Air-raid siren

Freesound 412171 · brightness 469 Hz · 0.4% above 2 kHz
Air-raid siren spectrogram: low wail below 2 kHz.

Church bell — Kölner Dom

Freesound 197861 · brightness 448 Hz · 0.1% above 2 kHz
Church bell spectrogram: warm, deep, full-spectrum.
Why it harms

Three things a sound does to a body.

01

The onset hijacks the reflex

A near-instant strike triggers the acoustic startle reflex — an involuntary sympathetic response whose magnitude scales with how fast the sound arrives.

02

The sharpness can't be ignored

The higher and brighter the energy, the "sharper" the sound reads to the brain — and the more it registers as unpleasant and alarming. The bell is pitched into exactly that region.

03

The dose adds up

Repeated exposure raises cortisol in children and impairs cognition; chronic noise is tied to anxiety- and depression-linked pathways.

Arregi 2025; Stansfeld 2015; Hahad, Nature 2025; WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines 2018

The honest edge: the school bell has not been isolated as its own exposure in the peer-reviewed literature. It is a documented member of a class of impulsive, high-frequency alert noise shown to be harmful. We state the floor, not more than it.

The honest parallel

The bell is a dose, not the disease.

The tempting story — a harsh bell makes anxious children — is too simple, and the real numbers break it. The countries with the gentlest school signals carry the highest youth suicide. Sound alone does not explain the outcome.

JapanGentle chime17+ — among the highestHigh — PISA test anxiety above the OECD average

So the driver is not the sound — it is the judgment regime: how intense and how inescapable the evaluation is. Korea is the proof. It silenced the bell and turned the entire childhood into one permanent examination — the gavel moved from the bell to the exam, and grew. The school bell is one small, daily, audible dose of that same irreversible-judgment signal: the only dose you can actually hear, and the only one that is free to remove.

The honest edge: a correlation across ~40 countries is directional, not causal — youth suicide is dominated by forces far larger than a two-second sound (economics, isolation, and how each country counts its dead). We present the parallel and its limit, not a claim the data cannot carry.

Sources. OECD, Society at a Glance 2024 — youth (under-30) suicide highest in Korea, New Zealand, Japan, Estonia, at 17+ per 100 000. OECD PISA 2022 — test-anxiety measures by country. Kim et al. (2022) — suicide is the leading cause of adolescent death in Korea. ISDP (2026) — Korean academic pressure and hagwon study hours.

The cost of fixing it
It's a sound file. The fix costs $0.

In most schools the bell is already a programmable tone through the PA or master-clock system. Replacing it is a file and a setting — and the replacement already exists, in real schools, worldwide.

Saying no is the expensive option.

Fire alarm — untouched

Must stay loud and startle-grade. Code requires it. It saves lives. We never touch it.

Class bell — decoupled

Pure scheduling, no safety function. Under Section 504, the ADA, and IDEA, a documented startle or sensory response is grounds for a reasonable accommodation — and here the accommodation is free.

Your school

Do the arithmetic.

864,000involuntary startle events administered to children, per year, in one school.
Across a 13-year education, that's 18,720 for a single child.

Every one of them is optional. The fix is a file.

What to do

Two ways in.

Parents & families

The accommodation exists

Under Section 504, a documented startle or sensory response is grounds for a reasonable accommodation — and here the remedy (swapping the startle bell for a sensory-safe signal) costs nothing to make.

The fix is a file and a setting

In most schools the bell is already a programmable tone through the PA or master-clock system. A gentler, sensory-safe signal does the same job — audible, unmissable, without the startle.
