Tomb of the General

The Tomb of the General (將軍墳) at Ji'an, Jilin Province, China, in the area of the historical Goguryeo capital of Gungnae on the north bank of the Yalu River. Construction date approximately 413–491 CE during the late Goguryeo period, attributed by some scholars to King Jangsu (r. 413–491) and by others to his father King Gwanggaeto (r. 391–413). The structure is a stepped stone pyramid 12.4 metres tall on a base of approximately 31 metres per side, built of seven receding tiers of dressed granite blocks — the construction quality and dressed-block technique have led to its long-standing nickname the Pyramid of the East. The summit preserves the foundation of a small wooden mortuary shrine and a small stone burial chamber accessed through a side passage. Goguryeo was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, controlling Manchuria and the northern Korean peninsula from the first century BCE to 668 CE; the Ji'an cemetery is the largest concentration of Goguryeo royal monuments anywhere in the world.
