Located at Zawyet el-Aryan between Giza and Saqqara, the Layer Pyramid is an unfinished step pyramid attributed to Pharaoh Khaba of the 3rd Dynasty (c. 2640 BCE), though this identification remains disputed — no royal inscriptions or artifacts have been found. The structure rises in 14 accretion layers leaning inward at 68° angles, a technique that gives the pyramid its modern name. Only about 17 meters of the planned height were completed. At Giza bearing 333.19° and just 5.8 km from the Great Pyramid, the Layer Pyramid sits in a military zone that has restricted archaeological access since 1964. Stone vessels inscribed with Khaba's serekh were found in the nearby mastaba Z500, providing the only tentative link to this pharaoh. The pyramid's unfinished state, like Sekhemkhet's Buried Pyramid, suggests the instability of the late 3rd Dynasty — a period of short reigns and ambitious projects left incomplete.
