Third-dynasty pyramid at Zawyet el-Aryan, north of Saqqara, attributed to the obscure pharaoh Khaba (~2640 BCE). The unfinished structure rises through five layers (originally planned for fourteen) to a current height of 16 metres on a 84-metre square base. The masonry uses small limestone blocks laid in inwardly inclined courses — the same accretion technique used at Djoser's step pyramid, transitional toward the later true-pyramid form. The substructure contains a vertical shaft sunk 26 metres to a granite-lined burial chamber that was found empty. The kingship of Khaba is known almost entirely from this pyramid and a handful of stone bowls; no other monument bears his cartouche.
Egypt forgot a pharaoh so completely that the only way we know he existed is the failed pyramid he left behind.
