The tomb of Khentkaus I at Giza — sometimes called the "Fourth Pyramid" — is a unique two-tiered structure: a massive rectangular rock-cut base topped by a mudbrick mastaba, rising to roughly 17 meters. Khentkaus bore the extraordinary title "Mother of Two Kings of Upper and Lower Egypt," likely Sahure and Neferirkare, making her a pivotal figure in the transition from the 4th to 5th Dynasty. Her monument's position between the Giza and Abusir pyramid fields — at Giza bearing 25.86° and just 1 km from the Great Pyramid — marks her as a bridge between dynastic traditions. A small settlement of priests' houses was built against the monument's causeway, one of the earliest known pyramid towns. Her second tomb at Abusir confirms her exceptional status: few figures in Egyptian history warranted two monumental tombs. The structure's unusual form — neither true pyramid nor simple mastaba — suggests deliberate architectural innovation for a queen of singular authority.
