The northernmost of three queens' pyramids aligned east of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramid G1-a originally stood approximately 30 meters tall with a base length of 46.4 meters. Long attributed to Queen Meritites I, Khufu's principal wife, recent scholarship has questioned this identification. The pyramid's simple descending passage and burial chamber follow the standard queens' pyramid plan. At Giza bearing 281.52° and a mere 200 meters from the Great Pyramid, G1-a sits within the electromagnetic shadow of the largest ancient structure on Earth. The three queens' pyramids together form a scaled model of the Orion's Belt alignment that Robert Bauval proposed for the three main Giza pyramids — a fractal repetition of celestial geometry at a smaller scale. A shaft tomb near G1-a contained the intact burial of Hetepheres I (Khufu's mother), discovered by George Reisner in 1925 — one of the richest Old Kingdom finds ever made.
