Perched on a hilltop at Abu Rawash, 8 km north of Giza, the Pyramid of Djedefre (c. 2528-2520 BCE) occupies the highest elevation of any Egyptian pyramid at 150 meters above sea level — placing its summit higher than the Great Pyramid's apex despite its smaller size. Djedefre, Khufu's son, chose this isolated site after a disputed succession, possibly involving fratricide. Once comparable to Menkaure's pyramid, it was systematically quarried for stone from Roman times onward, leaving only the rock-cut foundation trench and subterranean passages. French excavations revealed that Djedefre's complex contained the earliest known sphinx (a queen's head) and some of the finest royal statuary of the Old Kingdom. At Giza bearing 135.81° and 8.2 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the site's commanding position overlooks both the Nile Delta and the Giza pyramids, suggesting Djedefre intended his monument to dominate the horizon of his father's legacy.
