Pyramid of Khentkaus I

29.9258°N, 31.2161°E.

Mortuary monument at central Saqqara of Khentkaus I, 4th-dynasty queen who appears to have been the mother of two kings of the 5th dynasty, Userkaf and Sahure. The structure is unique in Egyptian architecture: a single stepped mastaba on a stepped base, the lower portion carved from the bedrock. Total height approximately 17 metres; total length approximately 47 metres. The internal burial chamber contained fragmentary granite pieces from a destroyed sarcophagus and small finds suggesting an elaborate burial. The funerary complex includes a chapel decorated with reliefs identifying Khentkaus as “mother of two kings of Upper and Lower Egypt” — an unusual title implying her role as transitional figure between dynasties. Her exact identity and the relationship between her two royal sons remain debated.

A queen of the fourth dynasty was the mother of the first two kings of the fifth — and her tomb is neither pyramid nor mastaba but a hybrid that exists nowhere else.
