Thirteenth-Dynasty pyramid at South Saqqara, built for pharaoh Khendjer, who reigned approximately 1745 BCE for roughly four years. Original base 52 metres per side; original height around 37 metres at a 55° slope. Excavated by Gustave Jéquier between 1929 and 1931. The pyramid was completed in its lifetime — including the polished limestone casing, the burial chamber sarcophagus, and the mortuary temple — and is one of the few Thirteenth-Dynasty royal monuments to reach finished state. The substructure preserved a quartzite burial chamber with a sliding roof, the king's basalt sarcophagus and canopic chest, fragmentary Coffin Texts, and the pyramidion of black granite found in the rubble bearing the king's titulary on all four faces. Khendjer's name means The Boar — almost certainly a Semitic loanword, indicating a non-Egyptian or partly non-Egyptian origin during a period of increasing foreign settlement in the Delta.
A king with an immigrant's name, a finished pyramid, an intact pyramidion, and a reign so short most contemporary documents missed him entirely.
