The Pyramid of Athribis is the most enigmatic of the provincial pyramids — an eighth structure mentioned in ancient sources but no longer visible above ground. Located near the ancient city of Athribis (modern Benha) in the Nile Delta, 50.2 km from Giza at bearing 176.24°, this pyramid would be the only one of the provincial series situated in Lower Egypt, making it a potential northern anchor for the chain of small step pyramids extending south to Elephantine. The Delta's alluvial sediment and millennia of agricultural activity have buried or destroyed countless ancient structures, and the Athribis pyramid may survive only as subsurface foundations detectable by ground-penetrating radar or magnetometry. Its existence in textual records but absence from the visible landscape embodies one of Egyptology's persistent challenges: the Delta, where Egypt's earliest civilizations flourished, is also where the archaeological record has been most thoroughly erased by the Nile's own deposits.
