Susa's ziggurat has completely vanished — erased by millennia of continuous habitation, erosion, and destruction — yet the city that hosted it was one of the oldest continuously occupied places on Earth, with settlement evidence reaching back to 4395 BCE. Susa served as the Elamite capital and later as a winter residence of the Achaemenid Persian kings. The Code of Hammurabi stele was found here, brought as an Elamite war trophy from Babylon. The biblical Book of Esther names the city as Shushan, setting of the Purim story. At 265.94° Giza bearing across 1,647 km, Susa extends the Mesopotamian energy corridor deep into the Iranian highlands.
