Nippur was the undisputed religious capital of Sumer for over 3,000 years — no Sumerian king could claim legitimacy without consecration at the Ekur, the temple of Enlil, chief of the gods. The Ekur complex covered 32,000 square meters, while the Temple of Inanna stood southwest of the ziggurat. Over 30,000 cuneiform tablets discovered here constitute one of the largest textual archives of the ancient world. At 263.62° Giza bearing, Nippur sits along the Mesopotamian corridor linking ziggurats to the Egyptian pyramid field. The city's unique status as a neutral religious center — never the political capital of any dynasty — kept it continuously sacred from 5000 BCE through the Parthian period.
