Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) served as the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 883 to 706 BCE, when it was home to 75,000 people and the largest palace in the ancient world. The ziggurat was systematically destroyed by ISIS in 2016 using heavy machinery — one of the most devastating acts of cultural destruction in modern history. Before its destruction, excavators discovered a vaulted room inside the lowest level measuring 30m long, 1.8m wide, and 3.6m high — a mysterious chamber whose purpose remains debated. At 242.53° Giza bearing, the site sits along the northern Mesopotamian corridor. UNESCO restoration began in 2017. The site yielded the famous Nimrud ivories and the treasures of the Assyrian queens.
