At its zenith around 700 BCE, Nineveh was the largest city on Earth — 750 hectares enclosed by walls stretching 12 km, home to the famed Library of Ashurbanipal with over 30,000 cuneiform tablets including the Epic of Gilgamesh. The Temple of Ishtar contained the earliest known examples of magnifying lenses, suggesting advanced optical knowledge. The city fell dramatically in 612 BCE to a Babylonian-Median coalition, fulfilling the biblical prophecy of Nahum. At 241.03° Giza bearing, the ziggurat sits on the northern Mesopotamian corridor. ISIS severely damaged the site in 2015, but excavations in the aftermath uncovered a previously unknown Assyrian palace beneath the destroyed Tomb of Jonah.
