Mari (Tell Hariri) on the Euphrates was among the oldest planned cities in the world, and its ziggurat stood near the Palace of Zimri-Lim — one of antiquity's most magnificent royal residences, with over 300 rooms. The palace archive yielded more than 25,000 cuneiform tablets that illuminate diplomatic, economic, and social life across the ancient Near East. At 243.72° Giza bearing across just 1,047 km, Mari sits remarkably close to Giza on the geometric grid. The city featured sophisticated drainage systems and urban planning that predated Roman engineering by two millennia. The site was severely damaged by ISIS looting, with satellite imagery confirming extensive illegal excavations.
