The Jaguaruna sambaquis of southern Brazil rank among the oldest pyramidal structures on Earth — monumental shell mounds deliberately constructed over millennia beginning around 6000 BCE. Originally over 1,000 sambaquis lined the coast; fewer than 10% survive today. These are not refuse heaps but engineered funerary monuments: excavations reveal stratified burials with stone plaques, shell ornaments, and zoomorphic bone artifacts. At a 59.16° Giza bearing, the site sits within the South American Pleiades arc. The builders chose locations at the interface of lagoon and ocean — liminal zones where freshwater meets salt, mirroring the transitional role these monuments played between life and death.
