Part of southern Brazil's extraordinary sambaqui complex, the Santa Marta mounds reach heights of 70 meters and widths of 500 meters — dimensions that dwarf many Egyptian pyramids. Research by DeBlasis et al. (1998) established a 6,000-year antiquity for these deliberately engineered shell-and-earth monuments, making them contemporaries of the earliest Mesopotamian ziggurats. At 59.07° on the Giza bearing, Santa Marta falls within the same Pleiades corridor as its Jaguaruna neighbors. The sheer volume of material — millions of tons of shells, earth, and bone — required coordinated labor over generations, challenging assumptions about pre-agricultural societies' organizational capacity.
