The pyramid of king Teriqas in the Gebel Barkal cemetery, built for a Kushite ruler whose reign approximately 29–25 BCE coincides exactly with the Kushite war against Roman Egypt led by the Kandake Amanirenas. Original base approximately 12 metres per side; original height around 19 metres at the steep Meroitic slope. Excavated by George Reisner in the early twentieth century. Teriqas may have been the joint or co-regnant king of Amanirenas during the war — the surviving inscriptions of the conflict name both — making this pyramid the burial of the male partner in the most successful documented military resistance to Roman expansion in Africa. The substructure preserved a granite burial chamber, fragmentary canopic equipment, and grave goods including imported Mediterranean bronze.
A pyramid for a king who shared his throne with the queen who fought Augustus, in a cemetery beneath the sacred mountain of Amun that legitimised both their reigns.
