Discovered in 1987 beneath a Cossack village on the Russian steppe, Arkaim is a Bronze Age fortified settlement (c. 2000-1600 BCE) built in two concentric rings with a diameter of 160 meters — a layout so precisely circular that it was initially mistaken for a modern military installation in satellite imagery. The site's 60 houses, radially arranged like spokes, contained metallurgical furnaces — making Arkaim one of the earliest known centers of copper and bronze production in the Eurasian steppe. The settlement's geometry encodes 18 astronomical events including solstices, equinoxes, and lunar standstills — comparable precision to Stonehenge, built in the same era 5,000 km to the west. At Giza bearing 233.77° and 3,420 km from the Pyramid Plateau, Arkaim sits on the Eurasian corridor connecting Mesopotamian and Altaic civilizations. The site was nearly lost to a reservoir project before archaeologists secured its preservation in 1991.
