Cancuen defies every expectation of a major Maya city: positioned at the head of navigation on the Pasion River, it controlled the critical portage point where highland trade goods entered the lowland river system — yet it built one of the largest palaces in the Maya world (170 rooms across 23,000 sq m) while constructing virtually no temple pyramids. This commercial powerhouse dealt in jade, pyrite, and obsidian, preferring economic to military dominance. Around 800 CE, its entire royal court was massacred and dumped into a cistern.
