Dos Pilas was founded around 648 CE by B'alaj Chan K'awiil, a renegade prince from Tikal dispatched to control the strategic Pasion River trade routes. This act of imperial expansion created a volatile twin-capital system with Aguateca, as the dynasty played Tikal against the superpower Calakmul. Hieroglyphic stairways record elaborate military campaigns and ritual sacrifices. Extensive cave systems beneath the site served ceremonial purposes. By 761 CE, the city collapsed in warfare so total that its pyramids were dismantled for defensive walls. At 50.60° Giza bearing, Dos Pilas mirrors Aguateca's alignment within arc-minutes.
