Cempoala's Great Pyramid served as the main temple of the Totonac confederation capital — the first indigenous city visited by Hernán Cortés in June 1519. With a population of 25,000-30,000, Cempoala was one of the largest cities on the Gulf Coast. The Totonac leader Chicomacatl (Fat Chief) formed the crucial alliance with Cortés that enabled the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. The pyramid's rounded river-stone construction gives it a distinctive appearance unlike the sharp-edged limestone of inland sites. At 46.71° Giza bearing, Cempoala sits on the Veracruz coastal alignment that includes El Tajin.
