The North Platform closes the northern end of Monte Albán's Main Plaza in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, and is the largest single architectural complex at the Zapotec capital. The platform was built up over successive phases between approximately 200 BCE and 800 CE, with a sunken patio, a colonnaded entry, and a series of elite residences and temples on its summit. The complex covers more than 30,000 square metres and rises 25 metres above the plaza floor on quarried volcanic stone fill. Tomb 7, excavated nearby by Alfonso Caso in 1932, yielded 500 objects of gold, jade, turquoise, and rock crystal — the richest single tomb ever recovered in the Americas. The North Platform served as the seat of Zapotec royal authority for nearly a thousand years before the city's gradual decline.
The North Platform is a complex bigger than most ancient cities, set on top of a flattened mountain.
