North America's highest peak at 6,190 meters (20,310 feet), rising from a base elevation of only 600 meters — giving it the largest base-to-peak rise of any mountain on Earth's surface. The Koyukon Athabascan name Denali means "The Great One" or "The High One." It was renamed "Mount McKinley" in 1896 by a gold prospector who never climbed it, and the original name was not officially restored until 2015. The mountain creates its own weather systems, with temperatures dropping to -73°C and winds exceeding 240 km/h. Athabascan peoples have oriented their settlements, travel routes, and seasonal calendars around the mountain for over 10,000 years.
