The Pyramid of Djedkare-Isesi at South Saqqara, built around 2380 BCE, was the first royal pyramid constructed at this site — establishing a new necropolis south of the Djoser complex. Rising originally to 52.5 meters with a base of 78.75 meters, it was known in antiquity as "Beautiful is Isesi." The complex includes a satellite pyramid, a queen's pyramid, and connecting causeways. Djedkare's long reign of over 30 years marked a significant shift in Egyptian religion: he was the first pharaoh to not build a sun temple, signaling the decline of 5th Dynasty solar cult theology. At Giza bearing 329.64° and 16.5 km from the Great Pyramid, excavations of the burial chamber have yielded mummy fragments with evidence of a heart bypass — possibly the oldest known surgical intervention in history. The interior walls were uninscribed, placing Djedkare between the undecorated burial chambers of the 4th Dynasty and the Pyramid Text tradition his successor Unas would inaugurate.
