A medieval labyrinth once installed in Charlemagne's Palatine Chapel at Aachen — the spiritual center of the Carolingian Empire — destroyed during 19th-century renovations. The chapel (consecrated 805 CE) was modeled on San Vitale in Ravenna and served as the coronation church of Holy Roman Emperors for 600 years. Its octagonal geometry, inspired by the Dome of the Rock and Byzantine architecture, represented the eighth day of Creation. The lost labyrinth would have been among the earliest medieval church labyrinths north of the Alps. Giza bearing 325.17°.
