The Jaguar Temple at Lamanai (Structure N10-9) features elaborate jaguar-motif decoration celebrating the apex predator of Maya cosmology — the jaguar that traverses the underworld each night. Built during Lamanai's 3,000-year occupation spanning 1500 BCE to the 17th century, the temple sits at a Giza bearing of 51.08°, identical to its neighbor the Mask Temple. The jaguar held deep astronomical significance for the Maya: the Jaguar Sun deity moved through Xibalba (the underworld) between sunset and sunrise, mirroring stellar cycles the temple's orientation may have been designed to track.
