Rio Azul, near the intersection of Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize, was strategically dominated by both Tikal and the distant superpower Teotihuacan to control Caribbean trade routes carrying cacao, jade, and obsidian. The site is renowned for ornately painted royal tombs — Tomb 1 features hieroglyphic texts covering all four walls in red and black paint, among the earliest known Maya writing in the Peten. Looters' trenches devastated the site before formal excavation. At 50.78° Giza bearing across 11,716 km, Rio Azul sits at the northeastern corner of the Peten trade network that defined Classic Maya geopolitics.
