The Group E Observatory Complex at Uaxactun is the prototype for all Maya E-Group astronomical observatories — the architectural template for tracking solstice and equinox sunrises that was replicated across dozens of Maya cities. From a western observation pyramid, the sun rises over three eastern temples marking the solstices and equinox. The earliest Maya murals were also discovered here, depicting warriors and captives. Uaxactun's 50.69° Giza bearing places it deep within the Peten alignment corridor, and its astronomical function suggests the Maya understood geometric relationships that extended far beyond their visible horizon.
