Capital of North Korea on the Taedong River. Continuously inhabited since at least 1500 BCE; the modern city is built almost entirely after the Korean War (1950–53) destroyed approximately 75% of the previous structure. The Juche Tower (1982, 170 metres) commemorates Kim Il-sung's 70th birthday and is constructed of 25,550 granite blocks — one for each day of his life to that point. The Ryugyong Hotel (begun 1987, 330 metres, 105 floors) was intended to be the world's tallest hotel; construction was suspended 1992–2008 and the building remains officially unopened with cladding completed but the interior largely empty. The May Day Stadium has the largest stadium capacity in the world at 114,000. Kim Il-sung Square is precisely 75,000 m². The city is closed to international observers, satellite, and tourism except by approved escort.
