Founded around 800 CE — predating Machu Picchu by 650 years — Ciudad Perdida rises through 169 stone terraces carved into the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta at 1,300m elevation. The Tairona city supported 2,000 to 8,000 inhabitants, accessed only by a stairway of 1,200 moss-covered stone steps ascending through dense jungle. The Tairona were master goldsmiths whose filigree work rivals anything produced in the ancient world. The site's 57.47° Giza bearing places it on a geometric corridor linking Colombian highland sites to the transatlantic node. Rediscovered in 1972, the city remains a living sacred site for the Kogi, Arhuaco, and Wiwa peoples.
