San Andres, the largest pre-Columbian site in El Salvador's Zapotitan Valley, served as a regional capital for over 1,000 years before volcanic eruptions sealed its monuments under meters of ash. The Loma Caldera eruption around 610 CE — contemporaneous with the Ilopango catastrophe that devastated the region — buried portions of the site in a pyroclastic blanket that paradoxically preserved organic materials. An acropolis, large ceremonial plaza, and pyramid structures reveal a society connected to both Maya and non-Maya Mesoamerican traditions.
